Transmission 8115 - I'm Being Followed By A.....

as we enjoy our Sunday session in the Archives with
Harry Nilsson,
Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band,
Pink FlOrb,
King Crimson,
Djam Karet,
The Pretty Things,
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds,

"Have you ever watched a moonbeam
As it slid across your windowpane
Or struggled with a bit of rain
Or danced about the weathervane
Or sat along a moving train
And wondered where the train has been
Or on a fence with bits of crap
Around its bottom
Blown there by a windbeam
Who searches for the moonbeam
Who was last seen
Looking at the tracks
Of the careless windbeam
Or moving to the tracks
Of the tireless freight train
And lighting up the sides
Of the weathervane
And the bits of rain
And the windowpane
And the eyes of those
Who think they saw what happened"

RFW Rewind - A Salute To Our Veterans!

The Apocalypse End

In honor of Veteran's Day and the courageous men and women that have fought in past and present wars and those that might fight in (hopefully never to come) future wars, RFW respectfully rewinds to The Apocalypse End a remixed update of HAL 2 which was originally posted on RFW on October 5, 2006. It is a set I have been perfecting since 1979, this now
being the latest and ultimate version.

Today's show stars The Doors, The Clash, The Stooges, The New York Dolls, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Nico, Buckethead, Patrick Gleeson, Richard Beggs, Bernard L. Krause, Mickey Hart, Airto Moriera, Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Marlon Brando and an incredibly talented supporting cast of musicians, actors, editors and recordists.

The Apocalypse End is a 111MB 256K mp3 1:00:53 in length made loud to be played louder!

"the horror"

RFW

* The following is from the the original HAL 2 post - the words still ring true.

"Apocalypse Now" almost cost director Francis Ford Coppola his life! It gave to the world a night-fever look at the underbelly of the Vietnam War and burned phrases like "terminate with extreme prejudice" and "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" into our collective brain.

It's Original Soundtrack is one of the best examples of the marriage of music and cinema. Constructed by Coppola and his father Carmine Coppola, the use of "The End" is so effectively intertwined with the ominous sound of Patrick Gleeson's moog helicopters in the distance that it never fails to invoke chills and visions of the ravaged fields of Vietnam under heavy attack - the flames, the smoke, the sounds and Jim Morrison's dark poetry all synchronized together by them like master-magicians. Francis, I'm still stunned and amazed.

If it has been awhile or if by any chance you have never seen "Apocalypse Now", "Apocalypse Now Redux" or the equally compelling documentary by Eleanor Coppolla "Hearts Of Darkness :A Filmaker's Apocalypse", I recommend that you make it a point to do it today.

*Pianist and singer Julia Lee (1902-1958) recorded a lot of songs about sinful substances, from pie and cake to alcohol, most of which originated with the Kansas City blues tradition that Lee herself grew up in. However, her most overt song about unsavory habits did not, surprisingly, originate as part of the blues tradition, but was in fact a number from a Hollywood musical. In 1934, the lyricist and later producer Sam Coslow wrote "Marihuana" (as it was then spelled) for the film Murder At The Vanities. Cannabis was then still legal in many states, but it was already a taboo and risque subject for a mainstream pop song. Coslow later changed the title, and some of the lyrics with it, to "Lotus Blossom."

Transmission 5215 - Score

Back in September of 2006, RFW was a long dreamed of project that technology finally made possible. The first Transmission (HAL 1) was heard by my immediate family, a few close friends and and a handful of advanced music fans that discovered the then new blogosphere!

Here we are in September of 2015, a time when terrestrial radio sucks, Pandora/Spotify and the other dozen or so internet music sites that come and go daily are cold and sterile and the only real entertaining music shows are compliments of a select handful of fellow musicologists that dedicate their time and money to make art!

Now let's talk about you, the Radio Free Wohlman Family. You are 430,000 + strong and you listen in 194 counties around the world. My family and friends listen occasionally (usually when I force the issue), but you listen every week because you get it - I applaud you!

I would do RFW even if I was the only one who heard it, but because of you - it has become larger than me, you or the artists (the real inspiration). Together we are bigger, better and more relevant than any corporate product designed for soulless lemmings unwilling to take chances, experiment and indulge in the kitchen-sink mentality!

This show, the month-long celebration and the next ten years are awaiting you - are you ready?

Let's jump into the cake with The Chambers Brothers, Tho Doobie Brothers, The Allman Brothers, Vernon Reid, Bauhaus, T. Rex, The Arcs, Keith Richards, Gary Clark Jr., Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood!
