Japanese guitar terrorist Keiji Haino has always assaulted me into endearment and confused me. I am pretty sure his first name is Keiji, but I have seen it listed as Haino Keiji as well, such as on his Purple Trap collaboration with Bill Laswell and Rashied Ali! Whats the deal?

Our musical journey to France, Japan and Italy by way of Oregon includes Horrific Child, Jun Fukamachi 21st Century Band, Keiji Haino & Boris and Eyvind Kang. Passport please!

When Two Worlds Collide!

Most disciples of radio, especially those that spent time in the San Francsico Bay Area, know the names Dennis Erectus and Mel Karmazin. Mel's Infinity Broadcasting was the owner of the legendary San Jose rock station KOME-FM and Dennis was a notorius KOME personality (and the cloth from which all so-called "shock-jocks" that followed were cut).

This once-in-a-lifetime photo was captured at a station event and probably marks the only time that Erectus ever out-dressed Mel! By the smiles on their faces, you can tell that there was some twisted mutual admiration moment in progress.

I can only imagine what was being said at the exact time the picture was taken!
Mel has gone on to lead Sirius/XM Radio and sadly, Dennis suffered a severe heart attack in 2006 that has him still recovering.

I have met many people in my over 35 years of radio, but few as different and talented as these two. I owe them both for just being a part of their respective worlds.

This is as special as a picture gets and I wanted to share it with you all!

Dave RF Wohlman

* Dennis "Erectus" Netto died on June 11, 2012 after suffering a second an fatal heart attack. His family lost a wonderful man, radio lost an innovator and  originator  and I lost one of my best friends. You will be missed Mr. E.

I occasionally find myself defending the importance of Yoko Ono's music when talking to the unconvinced or uninitiated. For the record - I put Mrs. L in the same category of innovative artists as Carl Stockhausen, John Cage, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis and La Monte Young, to name but a few. John was most proud of his guitar work on classic Ono albums like Fly, Feeling The Space and the Yoko/Plastic Ono Band and might I dare state my opinion that in the long haul, she was as inspiring and influential as her late, great husband. The recent remix projects Out Of The Box and Yes, I'm A Witch are testaments that Yoko's music is alive and well in the past, present and future of rock, roll and the space in between.

* I mentioned that Freddie King was doing Clapton when talking about Have You Ever Loved A Woman. In fact, it's a blues standard written by Billy Myles and recorded by Freddie King as Federal single #12384 in 1960. It was of course, re-recorded by Eric's Derek & The Dominoes and has since become one of his signature songs.
